FUNHOUSE Puts The Fun Back In Horror

This week in the crypt we take a look at FUNHOUSE, the newest offering from Magnolia Pictures and Magnet Releasing.

You can catch FUNHOUSE beginning this Friday, May 28th in theaters and on demand.

FUNHOUSE revolves around down and out backup singer and celebrity ex-husband Kasper as he is invited to participate in a show that’s part “VH1’s Surreal Life”, part “Big Brother”, and part “Survivor” with the emphasis on surviving.

Clocking in at just around an hour and forty-five minutes, FUNHOUSE does an effective job of conveying it’s message. It gives viewers a look in the mirror so to say.

Written and directed by Jason William Lee (who also produced, edited, and did visual effects) and starring Valter Skarsgård, Gigi Saul Guerrero and Khamisa Wilsher viewers are treated to a good mix of characters that have a good script to work with.

While at the front of the film it looks like a straightforward horror flick, there’s also some dark comedy and a harsh look at society’s obsession with reality TV and celebrity status.

Where this will have horror fans raving is the kills. There’s a variety of kills, good blood and gore. The film sounds great, is well lit, and well directed.

The mix of characters adds to it. At times you find yourself hating one and then maybe rooting for them at the same time.

Where some fans may have an issue is the run time. At times the pacing can feel a little slow but it works with the story. The twists while might be predictable may irk some fans, but I thought they fit the story and weren’t twists just to be there.

Pair this with the first Saw film and Escape Room for a night of fun gore.

Rating: 4.5 out of 5.
